Over the past year, I've been re-reading several series of fantasy books, some of which I've already mentioned in earlier posts. I've now finished re-reading two series that I'd noted starting to re-read some time ago.

Mary Stewart:
The Crystal Cave
The Hollow Hills

As good as ever. This series remains one of the great modern approaches to the Arthurian myths.

Melanie Rawn
Sunrunner's Fire
Stronghold
Dragon Token
Skybowl

Have I mentioned before that I love these books? Politics, dragons, complex plots, well-developed cultures, two different and competing magical systems, great characters including some very strong and unforgettable women, heroes who make mistakes and have insecurities but manage to muddle along and finally sort of win but sometimes at great cost... good stuff.

Dragon Prince is one of my favorite series ever. It's the only one that's been able to make me cry about a character's death before even reading the book where he or she dies.

I really like Rawn's work. It's really been a great loss to fantasy that her illness has made it difficult for her to continue writing, not just because we may never get the final volume of the Exiles series, but becasue of all the other books she might have written but hasn't been able to.

At least she is writing again, though I haven't read her latest novel, Spellbinder yet.

There are over 1,000 books on my "I want this book" list, and all those wonderful writers keep publishing more books I want to read every year. I despair of ever being able to read everything I want to.
