I'd known from reading your review that the McCath and the Bobet were among your less-liked stories from the collection - interesting that they are the ones we most differ on in terms of personal response, and that there is a similar theme. For some reason, this "I've done/condoned/stayed silent in the presence of great evil in my time and am now compelled to find some way out no matter the personal cost" theme resonates very strongly with me. When it shows up in a story that's at all readable, that story really tends to stick in my mind.
I guess we all have certain themes and tropes that affect us more than others. Which is great, becasue that writers have lots more they can choose to work with and know they'll find an audience. ;-)
