I think it works best if you are familiar with Lovecraft's Dreamworld cycle - there are several stories in the same setting as The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath - but it's strong enough and contains enough internal worldbuilding to stand on its own. So yes, I'd recommend it. Vellett Boe makes a great protagonist.
